Canadian Quilters visit the Vale of Glamorgan

27 Jun

Recently a group of quilters from Canada visited Wales. Glamorgan Quilters, together with Bridgend Quilters were invited to meet up with them at Miskin Manor Hotel on the evening of 13 May, for a Show and Tell.

The ladies who were from Newfoundland and Ontario had brought many examples of their work along to show us the type of things they made. Obviously, there were no large bed quilts, airline luggage restrictions prohibited that, but what the quilts lacked in size was more than made up for in impact. There was a wide range of skills, artistic ability and imagination on show, together with some stunning embroideries. I found it quite interesting to find they had used many fabrics that we are familiar with on this side of the ocean.

Approximately twenty members from Glamorgan and Bridgend Quilters were at the Show and Tell and everyone brought an example of their work to show. It was surprising even to local members to see such beautiful quilts that we hadn’t realised had been made or seen by ourselves as a group before. I think it justifies another Quilt Exhibition!

The evening was rounded off with – yes, you’ve guessed it, tea, coffee and cake together with lots of friendly exchanges. The ladies had only arrived in the UK that day and were facing quite an action packed week, so it was soon time for them to have their evening meal before heading for an early night. Unfortunately, the weather predictions for the week were not good, but I hope the rain didn’t detract from their experience of Wales too much. At least the ladies from Newfoundland are used to a bit of rain.
