Salinder and Hilary Talk Textiles!

15 Feb

This month Salinder and Hilary talked about Indian quilts and textiles and how they are worked with the minimum of resources. When we consider that a lot of us in the group have two sewing machines, and these ladies have only recycled fabric, thread and a needle, and still produce amazing work, we should consider ourselves very lucky indeed. Everything is hand sewn by the women and sewing machines are used mostly by men, or in factories.

Salinder demonstrated how to wrap and wear a Sari with lovely model Jayne.

Hilary talked us through a museum collection of old and new quilts that she had seen on a recent visit to Jaipur.

Salinder told us about the elephant and how it is widely used as motif in Indian textiles, The Elephant is a symbol of wisdom, fertility, prosperity, strength and royalty.

Red House Quilting brought along a lovely selection of fabrics for us to browse and buy!

Last but by no means least, Jeannie brought in a fabulous wholecloth quilt that she has just finished working on. Amazing!
