Festival of Quilts 2014

12 Aug

On Thursday 7 August, 11 of us set off in a mini bus for a three day trip to the Festival of Quilts at the NEC. The bus dropped us off at the Holiday Inn to leave our bags and then took us off to the exhibition for the first of our visits. Over the next three days we shopped, listened to lectures, did workshops, saw some stunning quilts, laughed a lot, ate a lot (when our food eventually arrived – that’s another story!) and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Thanks must go to Helen Morgan for arranging everything.

The following quilt has an interesting history as it was pieced by Judy Mendelssohn, who is an honorary member of GQ. It was quilted by Bea Beale, who some members might also have known. When Bea sadly died, Sonia Fox took over the hand quilting. Intervening years have seen elderly parents to tend, sons leaving home, divorce, floods, bereavement and more. Through it all a star has been remembered – Bea Beale.’

Other members of GQ also had work exhibited at this year’s event.

Pam Stead and Jeannie Duncan Farr had their quilts accepted for the British Finnish Stash Challenge.

And, the school quilt that GQ members Hilary Carney, Monica Dennis, Isobelle Davies and Pam Stead were involved in making with Lakeside Primary School in Cardiff was also on show.

The quilt celebrates the school’s 50th anniversary. It took a term to complete with children from all year groups being involved in the making. 90 reception class left their hand print and the other classes were responsible for creating a decade panel. They had a very enjoyable time painting, sewing, stamping and ironing to create the desired effect. It now enjoys pride of place in the school hall.

GQ Members Hand Over Anniversary Wall Hanging to Lakeside Primary School

10 Nov

On 8 November GQ members Hilary Carney, Monica Dennis, Pam Stead and Isobelle Davis visited Lakeside Primary School in Cardiff to present the school with a wall hanging to mark the school’s 50th anniversary.

It is a project that they have been working with the children on over the last year.

The main panels focus on events that happened during the 6 decades that the school has been open and the top panel acknowledges the many clubs that the school runs, its links with St Gerard’s School, Lesotho and the work of the Parent Teacher Association. The hand prints at the bottom were created by the reception class. The central panel shows the school’s special 50th anniversary logo created by a year 6 pupil and the school’s motto – Living and Learning Together. The whole thing is decorated with dragonflies which are a feature of the school’s logo

The wall hanging was unveiled at the school’s assembly and well received with lots of oohs and aah’s from the children.

The children have been invited to enter a competition – to either count or guess how many dragonflies there are on the wall hanging – and the prize – chocolate money – yummy!!!

GQ members involved hope that the wall hanging provides happy memories of the schools 50th anniversary for many years to come.

Mothers of Africa Quilt Project

8 Jun

You may recall that earlier this year Cardiff School of Art and design sent details of a project that they were running to support the medical Charity Mothers of Africa. Last year Maggie Cullinane, a members of staff from the Art School coordinated the making of a quilt to raise funds for the charity and this year, she has been into some Cardiff primary schools to work with the children to produce some amazing wall hangings.

Year 2 and 6 children from Rumney primary school have produced a colourful one

And children from the ely &Caerau Children’s Centre produced some very colourful hand prints!
